and moving past feeling stuck

EMDR & TRAUMA THERAPY IN COLORADO SPRINGS | ONLINE ACROSS CO

Heavy emotional burdens can keep you feeling stuck, making it hard to see yourself clearly or have the confidence and clarity to move forward.

Low self-esteem, feeling over responsible, being very hard on yourself, always seeing the negative, and living on high alert...
These can all be signs that unresolved pain from the past is showing up in the present, disrupting life over and over again.

Your reactions and emotions can feel so big, and you’re not always sure why. You wish you could let go and have a sense of peace and calm in the present, but you keep cycling through the same feelings and they’re getting in the way of living your life the way you want to. You want to heal from past hurts so that they don’t have so much power over you, but you keep trying and it seems like nothing is working. You’re stuck.

Sometimes it can feel unbearable.

You don’t have to stay stuck, and you don’t have to do this alone.

Therapy for trauma can help you to resolve relational conflict and pain, identify and set healthy boundaries, learn ways of relating that leave you feeling safe and empowered, find clarity and direction to move forward, live at peace with yourself, and put past difficult experiences firmly behind you.

You don't have to do this alone.

TRAUMA THERAPY & EMDR

Can Help You Heal

EMDR THERAPY FOR TRAUMA

What is EMDR?

EMDR Therapy is a specific and evidence based protocol used to help people heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that can result from difficult life experiences.  It is often assumed that emotional pain takes a long time to heal, but repeated studies show EMDR to be effective in delivering  benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR is best known for effectively treating trauma, but it is also highly effective in reducing high emotion, neutralizing triggers, transforming negative thoughts and beliefs, and overall leading to the resolution of anything that feels "stuck." Often EMDR is effective when it feels like nothing else has worked to relieve suffering or symptoms.

How does EMDR work?

Just like our bodies are designed to heal from physical wounds, our brains are innately designed to heal from emotional wounds... however, sometimes emotional pain gets "stuck" in the face of very overwhelming life events. EMDR activates your brain's innate ability to heal and process memories so that they feel neutral and firmly in the past. You'll remember what happened and you'll remember that it was painful, but you'll no longer feel an emotional charge in the present.

EMDR can bring resolution much more quickly than traditional talk therapy.  My process is highly individualized, but usually looks like:

Step 1: Intake and planning sessions to focus on stabilizing, relieving current symptoms, and creating a plan for processing relevant memories or experiences

Step 2: Building up positive resources that can link up with negative and traumatic memories to help neutralize them... we want to make the good things feel bigger and the hard things feel smaller

Step 3: Reprocessing sessions to resolve disturbance connected to past memories, current triggers, and future fears

Step 4: Debrief, ensure all past memories and current triggers targeted in our plan feel resolved, and deveop a plan for moving forward and maintaining progress

Depending on the goal you set for EMDR and the complexity of the trauma we're processing, this typically takes between 8 and 15 sessions, and sessions can be split up weekly, biweekly, monthly, or quarterly... we'll create a personalized plan to best meet your needs.

AN APPROACH TO EMDR

that's different

EMDR is a structured protocol, and it can be just a process of following the script...

Or it can be so much more.

I weave together 25 years of mental health experience using a variety of approaches with the standard, evidence based EMDR protocol...

Which means we can tailor our plan to follow your unique,  individual needs over just following the general script...

So that you can experience deeper healing & lasting change.

EMDR THAT IS
integrative, intensive, & intentional

An Integrative Approach

EMDR in and of itself is a protocol that follows a script. What makes it magical is integrating in deeper insights and specific approaches that aid in the processing. I draw heavily from my years of experience and training with a variety of approaches that may include IFS parts work, CBT or DBT interventions, psychodynamic insight building, neurobiology, and more... depending on what best meets your needs & goals. We customize a plan just for you.

An Intensive Approach

EMDR is structured to minimize much of the distress of processing traumatic events, but processing trauma can still be difficult. I offer extended and intensive sessions that allow us to complete the processing of a single memory or target in one session instead of spreading it out over multiple sessions with time in between that can heighten emotion. This also allows us to accelerate the work so you can feel better faster.

An Intentional Approach

Clients often start EMDR feeling unsure of what to process, or like they don’t have a specific memory. This is okay, and I can walk you step by step though a process of identifying relevant memories and triggers, and then narrowing down what to process. We don’t have to process everything from your life, just an intentional selection of experiences that are most connected to the current symptoms you’re wanting to resolve to feel better now.
